WILDCATS WIN EAGLE INVITATIONAL, SANDERS NAMED GOLFER OF THE WEEK

April 2023

The Indiana Wesleyan men’s golf team has had great success in their recent outings.

A few weeks ago, the Wildcats took first place at the Eagle Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky, with sophomore Kyle Sanders finishing first overall, shooting a 142 to finish four under par. This performance led the way for Sanders en route to his Crossroads League Golfer of the Week award.

“This golf course set up perfect for Kyle,” Wildcats’ head coach Kyle Bloom said. “When a golf course sets up well for you, it gives you a lot of confidence. Kyle went out there and swung free the whole trip.”

Sanders was tied with senior teammate Jack Dykema for ninth place after the first round but came back to take first place by the end of the match.

“I didn’t necessarily think about that being a possibility after just winning a tournament,” Sanders said. “It was cool, but I try not to focus on accolades and accomplishments because that’s not what we’re about.”

Accolades aren’t the goal of this team but rather a byproduct of how they play.

“Free is our mission, our culture, and how we want to play golf,” Sanders said.

Dykema finished second at the invitational, two shots behind Sanders at 144, good for two under par.

“It was a tricky course here and there but at the same time very scorable, so it was fun to get that win as a team,” Dykema said.

The Wildcats are confident in their ability to win the conference tournament next Monday and Tuesday, May 1-2, at Taylor University.
